Dietitians’ perceptions of the continuing professional development system in South Africa

While the responsibility of CPD lies with the individual, as does most learning, it is only a supportive process. A system is required to assess and document skills.3 More than 10 years ago (1995) CPD was introduced to dietitians as a voluntary system. It was envisioned that through CPD, the values of the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA) would be upheld to portray the image of dietitians as credible, responsible and accountable for high standards of practice.10 Six years later, though, CPD became obligatory for all health professionals.11
